I build a company, research distributed systems, write stories and take photographs. Not always in that order.

Four things, roughly equal parts. A company, a research problem, stories, and pictures.

I'm Manny. I founded OpenOrigins in London in 2021 and still run it. Before that I did a PhD in computer science at Cambridge with Ross Anderson, and the research from it keeps going: I'm a visiting researcher there now, working on the ideas behind the Cambium network.

Away from the desk I write fiction and poetry, and I take photographs. I live in San Francisco.

OpenOrigins

Founder & CEO · Since 2021

Trust infrastructure for media and AI.

OpenOrigins builds cryptographic provenance: a verifiable record of where a photo, a video, an archive or an AI agent's work came from, made at the source. I run it with my co-founder and President, Ari Abelson.

Visiting researcher · Cambridge

How do lots of computers agree on what happened, fairly and quickly?

My PhD at Cambridge, supervised by Ross Anderson, was on decentralised computer systems. Its consensus design became Cambium, the network OpenOrigins runs on. I still work on it. Also published as Mansoor Ahmed-Rengers.
